Finding a Lost, Misplaced or Stolen iPhone
It's not uncommon to misplace those little things we often take for granted. Like your keys, ball pen or your mobile phone. You overcome the initial panic, collect your thoughts and try to recall the last time you saw them. Should you misplace your beloved and expensive mobile toy, like the iPhone, it's nice to know there's a sure recourse that can help you find it. You can just logon to Apple's MobileMe site at me.com and have your iPhone ring or play a sound that overrides its silent mode setting, if that's the mode it's in. Hopefully, when it sounds off, it's just buried under the pillow, or is under the sofa.
Displaying a message on your lost iPhone.
Or, if it suddenly dawned on you how thoughtlessly you left your iPhone at a friend's house, your beauty parlor, or dentist, no need to worry. Send a distress message from MobileMe to say something like, 'I appreciate if you could take care of my iPhone for me, will be there to get it back in no time. Your relieved friend (or patient), name. Thanks.'
Finding your iPhone on a map.
If you still couldn't figure it out, MobileMe will help you locate it with a unique feature called Find My iPhone. The site will nicely display a map indicating approximately where your iPhone is.
The approximate location should give a hint where it is, then you can send a short distress message. But you need to engage the Find My iPhone feature your iPhone's MobileMe. That should be a no-brainer as it's one of those things you can do to configure and personalize your mobile phone settings.
The Last Recourse: Remote Wipe.
When all else fail, the awful reality dawns that your wonderful iPhone is irretrievably lost or stolen. You can start worrying about replacing it later. In the meantime, you have personal and confidential data on the iPhone you need to do something about.
Start initiating a Remote Wipe from the site. This restores factory settings and, as the name suggests, wipes the iPhone database clean of your contacts, messages, pictures and whatever else you've put in there. Now should a kind soul return your iPhone to you, all those data you've wiped out can be restored.
- But first, do take advantage of its 60-day free trial. It's a blast.
